Seersucker

Seersucker is a lightweight woven fabric known for its puckered texture, which helps hold parts of the cloth slightly away from the skin. That is why it has long been associated with warm weather: it promotes airflow, feels less clingy in humidity, and naturally looks a little rumpled in a way that is part of the fabric’s character, not a flaw.

The name comes from the Persian phrase shir o shakar, meaning “milk and sugar,” a reference to the fabric’s mix of smooth and textured areas. English borrowed the term through Hindi and Urdu, and Merriam-Webster dates the word’s first known use in English to 1722.

Seersucker gets its signature texture from a special weaving technique that creates alternating smooth and puckered stripes, giving the fabric a lightweight, breathable feel.
